The pop icon, who in the 1980s set aside the fantasy girl image to tackle serious roles, died Thursday shortly before 9:30 a.m. PDT in a Santa Monica hospital, spokesman Paul Bloch said.

She burst on the scene in 1976 as one-third of the crime-fighting trio in TV's "Charlie's Angels." A poster of her in a clingy swimsuit sold in the millions.

To an extraordinary degree, that fight was played out in public, generating enormous interest worldwide. Her face, often showing the ravages of her illness, became a tabloid fixture, and updates on her health became staples of television entertainment news.

In May, her cancer battle was chronicled in an NBC primetime documentary, “Farrah’s Story,” some of it shot on home video. An estimated 9 million people viewed it. Ms. Fawcett had initiated the project with a friend and producer, Alana Stewart, after she first learned of her cancer.

TheSmokingGun.com obtained documents that suggest Staub seriously downplayed her 1986 arrest - a major story line during the first season and a hot topic on tonight's 9 p.m. reunion show.

On the show's June 16 finale, Staub insisted there were only two true facts about her in the 1995 book "Cop Without a Badge," penned by her ex-husband: She changed her name and she was once arrested.

The court papers show Staub - whose name was Beverly Ann Merrill back then - and then-boyfriend Daniel Aguilar were arrested in June 1986 in a kidnapping plot stemming from a cocaine deal gone bad.

She and Aguilar, a dealer for a Colombian drug family, were nabbed for allegedly holding a man for $24,000 ransom.
Staub insisted on-air that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but the papers state she called the kidnapped man's father and "threatened injury or death" if she didn't get the money.

When she was arrested in Miami, 6 kilos of cocaine and $16,000 in cash also were found.
The papers also say Merrill - who copped a plea to extortion charges and was sentenced to drug treatment - "worked for an escort service."

Staub's lawyer declined to comment on the documents.
Bravo said it didn't know about her past when it cast her on the show.
"We did not know about her past - the book or the allegations - when we cast her," said Bravo spokeswoman Cameron Blanchard, senior vice president of Bravo communications.

"Things only started to come to light during the taping of the show. There are background checks, but they are less extensive for a docudrama, where the subjects don't live together, than for a competition show, where everyone is in one house."

"The Real Housewives of New Jersey" has been the most successful installment in the franchise and is likely to be picked up, leaving wide open the question of Staub's future on the show.

Ed McMahon Passed Away, yes we all sad and lost one of funniest man. Ed McMahon was dead las night, end of his war to bone cancer at UCLA Medical Center. He was 86.

McMahon had been admitted to the hospital on Feb. 27, 2009 in extremely serious condition. At the time his publicist stated he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

McMahon will always be remembered as the witty sidekick to Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, and as the host for TV’s long running Star Search in the 80s. One of McMahon’s last gigs was as spokesman for Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes.

Courtney Kupets of Georgia Won Honda-Broderick Cup

Courtney Kupets a Georgian gymnast has won the Honda-Broderick CUp, given to the nation's top female college athlete.

Kupets received the award Monday at Columbia University.

In 2008 Kupet miss the game caused by Achilles'injury. Kupet returned to lead Georgia to its fifth straight NCAA championship. The senior won national titles in the all-around, bars, beam and floor competition. Her four titles tied the record for a single national meet.

At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Kupets won the silver medal in the team all-around and captured individual bronze in the uneven bars.

Kupets, of Athens, Ga., was among five finalists for the 33rd annual award. Softball great Lisa Fernandez presented her with the cup.

Todd Mathew Hollandsworth (born April 20, 1973 in Dayton, Ohio) is a former outfielder in Major League Baseball. He played with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1995-2000), Colorado Rockies (2000-2002), Texas Rangers (2002), Florida Marlins (2003), Chicago Cubs (2004-2005), Atlanta Braves (2005), Cleveland Indians (2006), and Cincinnati Reds (2006). He batted and threw left-handed.

Hollandworth graduated from Newport High School in Bellevue, Washington in 1991. He was drafted in the third round of the 1991 Major League Baseball Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

To up the ante for this third movie in the franchise, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is doing what pretty much every other animated movie is doing this year - coming out in 3D. The sneak peeks today are exclusively in 3D format, so they are not only hyping up the film, but the 3D technology.

3D already helped Monsters vs Aliens and Up do bigger business, and FOX could use the same success for Ice Age 3. The fact they are using these sneak peeks in 330 theaters to build up additional buzz could help word get out, or be seen as a little desperate.

The previous two Ice Age movies have made a lot of money, and been the most successful CGI franchise outside of Pixar. However, as is the case for every non-Pixar animated movie, the Ice Age movies have gotten more mixed responses from critics and the like.

It may say something that the most popular Ice Age character isn't one of the three main characters voiced by Ray Romano, John Leguizamo or Denis Leary. That honor goes to bit player Scrat, the Looney Tunes-esq unlucky little guy who can never hold on to his food.

Thai police medical examiners completed an autopsy on Friday and though the details were not made public, sources at the hospital said it stated there was no signs of injury to his body and “he died from an acute lack of oxygen.”

Today Carradines half-brother, actor Keith Carradine, threatened legal action against any “invasions of privacy” by Thai Rath.

David Carradine’s body was flown out of Thailand on Friday and Keith Carradine’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, said an independent pathologist would examine the body when it arrived back in the US.

Mr Geragos said the family had contacted the FBI and asked it to investigate the death because, “all we really know is not much more than what the public knows, and that’s disturbing”.

Bangkok Lumpini police chief Colonel Somprasong Yenthuam who is leading the investigation, said interviews with hotel staff and surveillance footage suggested no-one else was with Carradine when he died.

In a career which included more than 100 movies over 45 years, Carradine notched up three Golden Globe Award nominations, an Emmy nomination and a string of other accolades.

French Open Mens Final 2009

French Open Mens Final 2009 will be held today at 9:00 a.m EST. You can watch French Open Mens Final 2009 online or live on NBC, Roger Federer againts Roin Soderling.

Will Roger Federer have his first French Open title and his 14th Grand Slam title? Would Robin Soderling be able to do it and have his chance to prove that he's got what it takes to be a tennis star?. The time will answer.

It' a great tournament so far with some amazing upsets and big comebacks. Especially for Soderling who knocked off #1 Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. Nadal was considered an automatic for the finals since he had won the last four French Open tournaments but Soderling was able to eliminate him in four sets. Ranked 23rd, Soderling was also able to beat #10 Nikolav Davydenko and #12 Fernando Gonzalez to reach the finals. He had to comeback from down 4 - 1 in the fifth set against Gonzalez in order to advance.

Federer on the other hand is no surprise. He was expected to make it far into the tourney and challenge for the title. However in order to get to the finals he had to make a couple incredible comebacks. In the fourth round he was down two sets to none before he clawed his way back to win three straight sets and advance to the quarterfinals. In the semifinals he got in a hole again, digging himself a deficit of two sets to one against #5 Juan Martin Del Potro. Again he was able to show some resolve and win two straight sets to advance to the finals.

It sets up to be a great match-up for the championship. I am flipping back and forth on who I want to see win. Federer on one hand has never won the French Open and this would complete his career Grand Slam. But I always like to see the underdog win, and it would be great to see Soderling win over the #2 ranked player after already beating the #1 ranked player. I think I'll be rooting for Soderling.

Mutton Bustin on Western Festival to be next weekend

Mutton bustin performance will mark kick off of Western Festival. The festival will be held next weekend on June 12, 13 and 14.

The events will kick off Friday evening with a performance by World Champion trick roper Joan Wells. Following her performance will be the first of two days of Mutton Bustin’ before the Extreme Bull Blowout.

“We are doing mutton bustin’ both days because it was such a big hit,” said Lindsay Baines, Main Street interim director.

Following the bull riding competition, LoCash Cowboys will take the stage to perform the evening’s concert.

“We are so lucky to have them performing for us,” Baines said.
Immediately after performing in El Dorado, they are headed to Nashville for the Country Music Association Awards.

“They are playing in the CMA Festival and have been on the CMA’s Top 10 ballot for Duo of the Year the last two out of three years,” she said. “They are very talented guys and it will not be your average country concert.”

Their music is a combination of country and rock-n-roll.

Then events pick back up Saturday at the Civic Center and Butler County History Center.

A free chuckwagon breakfast will begin at 10 a.m. outside the Civic Center and continue until they run out of food.

The Heritage Events will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include such things as a fast draw competition, lil’ cowpoke roping and Western art and other items.

There also will be entertainment throughout that time, including performances by Jena Wedman, The Beasley Boys and a Navajo Spirit dancer.

Other events will be held at the History Center’s Cowboys, Crops & Combines events. They will have kid’s rope making, a tractor and engine show, Bluestem Vintage Car Club Show, Kansas Pigeon Club Show and kid’s barrel train rides, pony rides and a kiddie tractor pull, among other activities. The Dutch Oven Cook-off also will be held at the History Center.

“We’re just excited to be able to join an existing festival and enhance that with more of our agriculture focus down here,” said Teresa Bachman, History Center director.

“We’re going to open our north gate and people will just be able to walk right down here from the Civic Center,” she continued. “We have lots of shade and green grass.”

Their events will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the center being open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Then Saturday evening, things will heat back up with another performance by Wells, more mutton bustin’ and another Extreme Bull Blowout.

Following the bull ride, will be the big dance with Trent Crisswell On Tap performing.

The Frontier Western Saloon also will open at 5 Friday and Saturday nights. Beer will be sold until the end of the activities those evenings.

Then things will continue Sunday morning with cowboy church held at 9 a.m. in the arena. At 10:30 a.m., Wild Wiley’s Trail Ride will be held at the new horse arena at the El Dorado Lake and State Park. Barrel racing will follow the trail ride at the lake.

A $4 button gives people access to everything except the bull rides, which also require a $10 ticket for adults for one day or a $16 two-day ticket. Children 5 to 12 are $5 and children under 5 are admitted free.

Juveniles are pink, turning red as they mature into reddish brown or purple adults. Like all jellyfish, the lion's mane rides the ocean currents, pulsing its bell to force water out of the bell and push itself in the opposite direction to the current. Its life cycle goes through five stages, including two distinct body shapes (medusa and polyp). During the benthic, or bottom-dwelling stage, they attach to a surface — wood or stone are favorites — feeding with tiny tentacles and cloning new jellies. A single colony of jellyfish can be traced back to a polyp that may have first cloned itself hundreds of years before. Any piling in Puget Sound clothed with what looks like small white polyps may be in fact paved with the polyps of jellies.

In April, bottom-dwelling jelly polyps bud off tiny, baby jellyfish. By July, the juveniles have grown to the adult gobs we know so well. Adult males then release sperm into the water, where it is gathered by females that brood the eggs internally, then release them as ciliated beings no bigger than the head of a pin. These drift to the bottom, where they attach, and begin the life cycle anew.

Most adults die by October, victims of bacterial infection, depleted plankton supplies and the appetites of fish and other predators. Lions Mane Jellyfish typically feed on tiny crustaceans, zooplankton, small fish and moon jellies.

New details have emerged in the death of "Kung Fu" and 'Kill Bill' star David Carradine.

The hotel where the 72-year-old actor was found dead tells ET: "We are currently cooperating with the Thai Police who are still investigating the matter. As investigations are presently in progress, we are not in a position neither to discuss this case nor reveal any details pertaining to the case, moreover out of respect for the family members."

Meanwhile, an employee at The Nation -- the Bangkok paper that broke the story -- spoke with ET about their report, saying that Carradine had been invited to dinner with the film crew on June 3 and did not show up. They were unable to contact him, but believed he was resting because of his age.

According to Carradine's agent, the 72-year-old "Kung Fu" and "Kill Bill" star was in Thailand for a movie.

David's agent told WABC that he believes the actor died of natural causes.

TMZ last encountered Carradine back in March, when the guy -- who was always in a playful mood when we ran into him -- jokingly told our camera guy, "I could take you f"**kin' out man!"

Koko Tylor Died Wednesday

Koko Tylor a Chicago prominent Blues music died Wednesday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital In Chicago. Her phenomenon hits hits such as "Wang Dang Doodle," "I'm a Woman" and "Hey Bartender," Koko Taylor was 80

Her death came less than four weeks after her last performance, at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis, where she collected her record 29th Blues Music Award. She had surgery May 19 and appeared to be recovering until taking a turn Wednesday morning, and was with friends and family when she died.

"Koko Taylor's life and music brought joy to millions of people all around the world and Chicago is especially honored that she called our city her home for more than 50 years," Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley said.

Among those with her Wednesday was Bruce Iglauer, owner of Chicago-based Alligator Records and her producer, manager and friend since 1974.

Iglauer had never worked with a female vocalist before on his fledgling label, which was dominated by guitar-playing men. But he was impressed by Taylor's moxie and her sound.

"She was of the same generation as Muddy [Waters] and [Howlin'] Wolf, she had those [Mississippi] Delta roots," he said Wednesday. "Even though she had been living in Chicago since the '50s, her music was still deeply rooted in the South. She had that rhythmic sense, that sense of where you lay the words and how the band locks in around the singer, that intensity of people who have lived that life."

Born Cora Walton in Memphis in 1928, she grew up on a sharecropper's farm outside Memphis. Young Cora and her three brothers and two sisters slept on pallets in a shotgun shack with no running water or electricity. By the time she was 11, both her parents had died. She picked cotton to survive, and moved to Chicago in the early '50s to be with her future husband, Robert "Pops" Taylor. She found a job working as a domestic. Pops Taylor died in 1989.

She had sung gospel music in church while living in the South, and on weekends would attend the blues clubs in Chicago's burgeoning South Side scene, the heyday of Chess Records and such stalwarts as Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Willie Dixon. She would occasionally sit in and caught the ear of Dixon, who approached her in the early '60s about recording one of his songs, “Wang Dang Doodle.”

"I didn't know Willie Dixon from Adam's house cat," Taylor recalled in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. "But he says to me, 'I love the way you sound' and, 'We got plenty of men out here singing the blues, but the world needs a woman like you with your voice to sing the blues.' "

Taylor's 1965 hit recording of "Wang Dang Doodle" launched her career, and established her sound: a gruff, no-nonsense roar that was the female equivalent of Howlin' Wolf's baritone growl.

By becoming a band leader and a powerful voice in a male-dominated scene, she broke down barriers for many female entertainers who followed.

But when Chess folded in the early '70s, Taylor was back where she started, scrapping for a living.

"It was a devastating time for my mom," Taylor's daughter, Joyce "Cookie" Threatt, once told the Chicago Tribune. "Then she met Bruce [Iglauer]. It was like God put him there."

Taylor was already a distinctive artist when she came to Alligator, and with Iglauer's help began exploring a more vulnerable side of her persona on select ballads such as her epochal version of the Etta James hit "I'd Rather Go Blind."

Even when recording other people's material, the singer put her idiosyncratic touch on it, usually singing it a cappella in the studio, with the musicians following her.

Taylor, who won a Grammy Award in 1984, never adopted the blues lifestyle of hard drinking and philandering that consumed some of her peers. She was a devout woman, but at the same time deeply appreciative of how the blues communicated honestly and directly about everyday life.

As her daughter once told the Tribune: "She grew up singing in [the Baptist] church in Memphis, and people come into church to get washed. They don't come in there already clean."

At the same time, Taylor was not one to mince words. She could be devastatingly direct with anyone who crossed her.

"She was meticulous about her music, so if her band screwed up, they would hear about it," Iglauer said. "She would not bite her tongue."

For Taylor, the blues was life. She bounced back from similar gastrointestinal surgery in 2004 to write and record another album, the aptly titled "Old School," released in 2007 on Alligator. It would prove to be her final recording, though Iglauer said that in recent months Taylor was calling him and singing new songs over the phone.

"She was scheduled to go to Spain next week," he said. "She was still performing. At the Blues Awards in Memphis a few weeks ago, she was absolutely glowing. She would be exhausted standing by the edge of the stage, but when the lights went up, she would hop up and dance as soon as the music started. She would always say, 'If I can brighten one person's day with my music, that's what I live for.' "

Besides her daughter, Taylor is survived by her husband, Hays Harris; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Nate McLouth was sent to Atlanta in exchange for three prospects, according bo a statement released. Outfield prospect Gorkys Hernandez and pitching prospects Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke are headed to Pittsburgh in return for McLouth.

It's not surprising to see the Braves acquire some outfield help; none of their outfielders has an OPS above .700 and they're still well within striking distance in the NL East. McLouth was an All-Star in 2008 and despite an oblique injury, he was off to a good start in 2009, hitting .256/.349/.470 with nine home runs for the Pirates. In addition to his offense, he won a Gold Glove last year playing center field in spacious PNC Park.

For the Pirates, this is a bit more complicated. Everyone knows their new front office is rebuilding the club, but McLouth was signed affordably through 2011 and the Pirates aren't picking up either of the Braves' best prospects, Tommy Hanson, who was called up to Atlanta Tuesday, and Jason Heyward in the deal.

It's also almost certain that the Pirates will call up one of their own top prospects, Andrew McCutchen, to fill the newly-created hole in center field in Pittsburgh, but Pirate fans will likely be wondering if the team could've gotten more in return for one of the team's best players.

The answer to that question lies in McLouth's true value. Is he really a 26-homer, .500-slugging guy? Or will those power numbers settle a little bit? And even with that Gold Glove, there are questions about his defense, as most advanced metrics rate him pretty poorly.

What is a 20-homer center fielder with a decent glove and good speed worth? Is it more than Hernandez, Locke, and Morton? Did Huntington sell high here, or is he shipping away a perennial All-Star? These are the real questions Pirate fans need to be asking tonight.

Tega, who was a member of rap group Da Camp, was in the midst of working on their new album when the shooting took place. Details of the confrontation have yet to be made clear.

Princeton University asked their student to remain indoors briefly Wednesday after a report of an armed man on campus, but police determined that there was no gunman, according to the university's Web site.

However, four juveniles with a toy gun were taken into custody, New Jersey State Police said on the Web site Twitter. The state police said they had been given the information by Princeton University police.

The university Web site said the investigation continues "with Princeton Borough and Township police, who have reopened the campus."

"Shortly before 11 a.m., a male with what appeared to be a handgun was reported near the vicinity of Dod Hall dormitory," the notification said.

In Paris, the head of France's accident investigation agency, Paul-Louis Arslanian, said he was "not optimistic" that rescuers could even recover the plane's black boxes.

Arslanian said if rescuers don't find the black boxes, investigators should be prepared to continue the probe without them.

"I am not so optimistic. It is not only deep, it is also mountainous," he said. "We might find ourselves blocked at some point by the lack of material elements."

The reason for the crash remains unclear, with fierce thunderstorms, lightning or a catastrophic combination of causes as possible theories. France's defense minister and the Pentagon have said there were no signs that terrorism was involved.

The crew made no distress call before the crash, but the plane's system sent an automatic message just before it disappeared, reporting lost cabin pressure and electrical failure.

French military spokesman Christophe Prazuck said the naval recovery operation will start on the surface, then could turn to the use of submarines to help find the black boxes.

The effort is expected to be exceedingly challenging. Storm season is starting in the zone and low visibility hampered rescue efforts Tuesday. Water depths in the area sink down to 22,950 feet (7,000 meters).

Military planes and ships struggled through high seas and heavy winds Wednesday as they searched for the bobbing wreckage of an Air France jet in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, while an investigator said the plane's black boxes may never be found.

Rescue boats from several nations were sailing toward the site to start the recovery as aviation experts tried to determine why the plane carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris on Sunday night ended up in the sea.

An airplane seat, a fuel slick, an orange lifevest and pieces of white debris were spotted Tuesday in the ocean about 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast.

The floating debris is spread out in two areas about 35 miles (60 kilometers) apart, not far off the flight path of Flight 447. Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim said no bodies had been found and there was no signs of life.

Four boats and a tanker ship are en route to the scene but Brazil's lack of equipment to scour the ocean floor was a problem, a navy spokeswoman said Wednesday. Brazil was leading the search for wreckage, while France took charge of the crash investigation.

"The seas in the area are high, and that is slowing the arrival of our ships," she said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "We have four divers on the way, but the first of them will not get to the scene until midday Thursday."

The official said if the black boxes are at the bottom of the sea — three miles deep in some nearby areas — there was nothing the Brazil navy could do as they do not have the special remotely controlled subs needed to withstand the pressure at the ocean's bottom.

"We'll really only be able to carry out recovery efforts on the surface of the sea," the official said. "If the black boxes have sunk, we don't have the equipment to look for them."

The black boxes — voice and data recorders — are built to last 30 days underwater.

Wreckage has been found in the Atlantic Ocean that could have come from a missing Air France jet that disappeared early Monday with 228 passengers and crew onboard, Brazilian aviation officials said Tuesday.

Floating objects, a drum, seats, and other items were found 700 kilometers (434 miles) from the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, said Brazilian Air Force spokesman Jorge Amaral. The search will continue but there is not enough material to officially say this is the wreckage from Flight 447, Amaral said.

The Airbus A330 encountered heavy turbulence early Monday, about three hours after the jet left Rio de Janeiro for Paris on an 11-hour flight, according to Air France CEO Pierre-Henri Gourgeon.

The majority of the presumed dead from the flight came from Brazil, France and Germany. Two Americans were onboard. In addition, victims came from 26 other countries.

Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago of 21 islands around 354 kilometers (220 miles) off the northeast coast of Brazil. It lies in what could be the flight path between Rio de Janeiro, where the plane departed, and Paris, the flight's destination.

A report by the crew from the Brazilian airline TAM who said they saw "shiny spots" in the sea along the route of Flight 447 prompted a search in the territorial waters off the African nation of Senegal.

Senegal is northeast of Fernando de Noronha and near what would have been the plane's presumed flight path.

There were two United States Americans onboard the plane and they have been identified as Anne DeBaillon Harris and Mike P. Harris.

Air France said 11 of the 12 crew members were French but did not release their names.

The flight captain, 58, joined Air France in 1988 and had 11,000 hours of flight hours including 1,700 on aircraft of the same type as the A330-200 that disappeared.

The two co-pilots were 37 and 32 and had over 9,000 flight hours between them.

The head of the cabin crew was 49, his deputies were 54 and 46 years old. Of the six flight attendants aged between 24 and 44, one was Brazilian.

General Motors Corp. filed for bankruptcy reorganization, the stock is about to get dumped onto the pink sheets and even so, GM stock still popped up.

GM stock closed on Monday at 75 cents a share -- flat from Friday. Shortly before closing, though, the stock had been trading around 81 cents a share, up 6 cents. It was a considerable increase after GM fell more than 25% in early trading Monday.

Everyday investors are still being warned that there is no money to be made in GM and that the stock remains essentially worthless.

"The common shareholders are wiped out," said Christopher Ruth, chief investment officer for Comerica Asset Management in Detroit.

He said Monday most investors would likely want to sell GM stock and take losses based on the bankruptcy plans outlined Monday.

Ruth said short-term traders and hedge funds likely were buying GM stock Monday to close out short positions. For example, an investor who borrows shares of stock from a broker and sells them on the open market is said to have a short position in the stock.

Today, GM will stop trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The NYSE makes such moves if a company falls below any continued listing standards and files for relief under provisions of the bankruptcy laws.

The "GM" ticker symbol will be gone as well. A new ticker symbol was issued Monday: GMGMQ. The stock will end up on the over-the-counter market.

GM will be dropped from the Dow Jones Industrial Average as of Monday. GM, which was added to the Dow in 1925, is going to be replaced by Cisco Systems Inc.

Once a company files for bankruptcy protection, it is disqualified from being one of the 30 stocks that are part of the Dow industrials index.

President Obama will be hosting a summit on “fiscal responsibility” this week. The exact purpose of such a summit at a time when the world economy is collapsing from a decade of financial irresponsibility is not clear. However, one name on the guest list does stand out: Peter G. Peterson. (Full disclosure: I am also on the list).

Those who follow debates on budget issues closely have probably heard of Peter G. Peterson. Mr. Peterson has been a prominent figure weighing in on budget debates for close to two decades.

Mr. Peterson was the Commerce Secretary in the Nixon administration. He then went on to make billions of dollars as one of the top executives at the Blackstone Group, a private equity fund. Mr. Peterson is known as one of the top beneficiaries of the fund managers’ tax break, through which he personally pocketed tens of millions of dollars.

Mr. Peterson has never been shy about using his Wall Street wealth to try to cut Social Security and Medicare, and he recently stepped up his efforts. Last year he spent $1 billion to endow the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which seems to have destroying these programs at the top of its agenda. (Mr. Peterson also has a think tank named after him, the Peter G. Peterson Institute for International Economics.)

Peterson’s main story is that these programs are bankrupting the government and will impose an unbearable burden on future generations. Of course, the reality is that we have a broken health care system. The projections of scary budget deficits that Peterson’s crew constantly cites is based almost entirely on projections of exploding health care costs. If the United States can get its health care system in order, as every other country has done, then we would be projecting enormous budget surpluses as far as the eye can see.

It is remarkable that the Peterson crew can continue to whine about generation inequality even after we just saw the most enormous redistribution from older generations to younger generations in the history of the world. The $8 trillion in wealth lost in the collapse of the housing bubble was mostly held by older workers and retirees. The $7 trillion lost in the stock market collapse was also primarily held by older workers and retirees.

The beneficiaries of these huge price declines will be younger workers, and those yet to enter the labor force, who will be able to buy homes and stock at prices far lower than they would have paid just two years ago. This huge generational redistribution would cause serious economists to change their view of inter-generational fairness. After all, how much money do they think the baby boom cohort should be forced to surrender?

However, this massive redistribution from older generations to younger ones has just caused the Peterson crew to redouble their efforts. After all, the Peterson crew somehow couldn’t see an $8 trillion housing bubble as it was growing. Why should they pay any attention to it now, just because its collapse has thrown the world economy into the worst downturn since the Great Depression?

Unfortunately, instead of being subject to the ridicule they so richly deserve, the Peterson crew is treated reverentially by the media. Ostensibly serious news outlets suspend normal journalistic practices in discussing the Peterson gang.

This deference is best evidenced by the way the Peterson Foundation is described in news stories. Instead of describing the Peterson Foundation by its political leanings, in a recent article the Washington Post characterized the Foundation as an organization that “advocates for federal fiscal responsibility.” The New York Times described the Foundation as having been “formed to raise awareness about the nation’s economic challenges.”

Every organization has boilerplate wording that describe its mission. (The Center for Economic and Policy Research “was established in 1999 to promote democratic debate on the most important economic and social issues that affect people’s lives.”) News outlets never use these descriptions in their coverage – except in the case of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.

The public would be right to be outraged that a Wall Street billionaire is trying to take away the core social insurance programs that they will be dependent on in their old age. It was the Wall Street crew that wrecked the economy, costing millions of people their jobs and tens of millions their life savings. Now Peterson wants to use much of his Wall Street winnings to take away the only source of support that tens of millions of retirees have left.

But no one expects ethical behavior from Wall Street tycoons. The public does expect a little more from the media. The people who report on budget issues should be able to step back and assess the issues themselves rather than just parrot the lines that the Peterson G. Peterson Foundation has fed them. And they should be able to sufficiently contain their enthusiasm for Peterson’s quest that they describe his Foundation in the same sort of language they use to describe the other actors involved in this debate.
