The Biltmore Estate on CBS Sunday Morning

The Biltmore Estate present this morning on "CBS Sunday Morning" as Asheville's retirement community took centerstage during the weekly newsmagazine.

The Biltmore Estate, a mansion built in the late 1880s by railroad heir George Washington Vanderbilt, is a tourist favorite and reknowned worldwide for its architectural grandeur.

The gardens at the Biltmore Estate were filmed in detail and showcased in the last segment of the show, broadcasting for the first time in high definition.

In the cover story about Asheville's retirement community, correspondent Martha Teichner talked to various retirees, visiting the Biltmore, downtown Asheville, the Asheville Arts Museum and UNC Asheville's Center for Creative Retirement.

The show, now in its 30th year, explored the identity of this group through interviews with a former schoolteacher who came out of retirement to work part-time at the Biltmore, a couple who moved downtown Asheville for the arts and the Cliff Communities developer.

Don Cooper and Lisbeth Riis Cooper, founders of CooperRiis, a residential, therapeutic community for the mentally ill or emotionally distressed, also discussed this project in the segment. The Coopers run a facility in Mill Spring, but said on the program they are currently working on opening up a similar community in Asheville.

Osgood was on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate Wednesday and the crew that shot the retirement segment was in the area May 5-7.

Speaking between shoots on Wednesday, Osgood said it was his first time at Biltmore and that it was a good choice for this week's program high-definition broadcast.

“It's such a beautiful spot that no matter where you point your camera, you get something great,” the anchor said.

Past annual design shows were shot in Berlin and Chicago.
