Ellis Island Tourism Next Face

Statue of Liberty will reopen on Fourth of July to Boost Ellis Island Tourism. The announcement was red by The Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar on TODAY exclusive report this morning. Ken salazar speaking from the crown of the Statue of Liberty and said announce that The Statue of Liberty will reopen to public on Independence Day.

On the Fourth of July, we will open up the Statue of Liberty to the people of America,” Salazar told TODAY co-host Matt Lauer from inside the crown of the iconic symbol of freedom. The interior of the statue that poet Emma Lazarus called “The New Colossus” has been closed since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. (While Liberty Island and the statue’s pedestal were reopened in August 2004, the statue itself has remained off-limits to the public.)

Statue of Liberty tours have been very popular in the past and still are. However, the visitations to Statue of Liberty were ended after 9/11 for security reasons. Usually the Statue of Liberty tours include allowing you to go inside the pedestal, see the interior structure of the Statue, take in sweeping 360-degree views from the pedestal observation deck and Ft. Wood. Now, since the monument's Crown will reopen for tourists and visitors you can go inside the crown to enjoy the magnificent view of New York City and parts of New Jersey.

Statue of Liberty History

In 1865 at a dinner party a gift idea from France to the U.S was conceived. The location was near Versailles. This part of the history of Statue of Liberty is accounted by Bartholdi himself in 1885. The statue's construction began in 1875 and it's original title was "Liberty Enlightening the World." Inspiring isn't it? Until the spring of 1885, when she was dismantled for the long voyage to America, Liberty remained in Paris, the hostess to thousands of French visitors.

Ellis Island History and Records

This historical island has for centuries been the most used portal to the United States for immigrants from around the world. While there were many other important entries into the country, it is estimated that more than 100 million Americans are directly related to immigrants who passed through Ellis Island during its tenure as an immigration station. Many Americans visit Ellis Island to discover their past history by searching the records. Passenger manifest records were kept of the more than 22 million people who entered the United States through Ellis Island. Ellis Island records include data available on immigrants contain up to eleven fields including important information such as name, gender, age on arrival, marital status, ship name, port of origin, and last residence.
